The Carer – Deborah Moggach
Publication Date: April 2, 2020
James is getting on a bit and needs full-time help. So Phoebe and Robert, his middle-aged offspring, employ Mandy, who seems willing to take him off their hands. But as James regales his family with tales of Mandy’s virtues, their shopping trips and the shared pleasures of their journeys to garden centres, Phoebe and Robert sense something is amiss.
Then something extraordinary happens which throws everything into new relief, changing all the stories of their children – and the father – that they thought they knew so well.

The Carer by Deborah Moggach surprised me in a lot of ways. I went into it expecting a bit of a sinister mystery. The blurb and cover hint that something is amiss with Mandy, the carer that Phoebe and Robert hire to care for their ageing father James. While there is a mystery element, it completely surprised me. The twist was not at all what I expected. I don’t want to give away anything, but I will say that you won’t be expecting it.
I read the first part of this book incredibly quickly; I was enthralled. When Phoebe and Robert hire Mandy, she seems like a godsend. She can handle any situation, and has a solution for everything. She is a bit weird, but she gets on so well with their father than Robert and Phoebe are ecstatic. And then, things start to get a bit strange. Their father is deteriorating, and his children start to become sceptical about Mandy. The first part of this book is fast-paced and exciting. I couldn’t put it down – I just had to know what was going on.
The Carer is a fascinating family drama with a few surprising twists. As soon as you think you know this dysfunctional family, the next page surprises you. Deborah Moggach excels at characterisation; the characters in The Carer are so raw and realistic. I was drawn into their worlds, and loved watching them grow and learn as the story progressed. If you enjoy stories about dysfunctional families with a lot of secrets, then The Carer by Deborah Moggach is a great choice for you.
